Winter is almost done for, my friends. No more awkward layering; no more bitter temperatures; no more laying in your warm bed debating whether or not you can get away with calling in sick, simply because you don’t want to leave your cocoon of blankets. I won’t miss you, Winter. As far as I’m concerned, you wore out your welcome on December 26th.
Regardless of that fact that I’m totes ready for winter to move on to the great beyond, spring isn’t quite ready to take over just yet. The following is a guide to help you navigate the last couple weeks of winter like a true pro. Check out my winter blues-busting tricks!
1. Put Mind Over Matter
Some days you’ll need to remind yourself that this, too, shall pass. Winter may seem never-ending, but the warm light of spring waits at the end of that chilly tunnel.
If you tend to focus on winter’s negative aspects, why not try to redirect your thoughts? Take up yoga, practice daily meditation, try aromatherapy or indulge in a rejuvenating massage.
2. Tantalize Your Taste Buds
Standard soups and casseroles may keep you warm, by why not take your taste buds on an adventure? Winter may keep you stuck indoors, but there’s no reason your taste buds can’t travel the globe.
Use the time you spend avoiding the cold to try your hand at cooking new cuisine. Take your taste buds on a journey to India, Greece, Vietnam, Bolivia or Brazil.
3. Warm Up from the Inside Out
Winter is the season for enjoying hot drinks. Ditch the store brand and treat yourself to luxury brews or exotic loose leaf teas.
Better yet, create a dedicated hot drink bar in your home. Stock it with fancy mugs and special toppings like whipped cream, sprinkles, cinnamon, nutmeg, peppermint or even cayenne. There’s no harm in sticking to tried and true, but don’t be afraid to put a new twist on an old favorite.
4. Don’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em
Don’t spend your time wishing winter away like me. Get productive and enjoy some seasonal activities that you might miss when they’re gone. Take a trip to your local ice rink, bundle up and take pictures of cool ice structures around your town, or try your hand at ice fishing.
5. Bring Joy to Others
Give and it will come back to you. If you spend your time spreading joy to others, you’ll find your spirits lifting as well.
Use these last few weeks of winter as an opportunity to get involved. Help out at a local animal shelter, serve at a soup kitchen, volunteer at your local library or spend time visiting lonely patients in nursing homes.
6. Plan a Special Night with Friends
Frigid temperatures keeping you indoors? That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Instead of wishing you could be outside barbecuing or at the beach, invite your friends to join you for a night of indoor fun.
Host a movie marathon, a wine-and-cheese tasting or throw a fancy brunch. Try a murder mystery dinner or a challenging cooperative board game. Get in touch with your inner child by bringing back old favorites with game nights that include Sardines or Mafia.
7. Get Your Blood Pumping
It’s easy to become sluggish during winter, so get out and get your blood pumping. Join an indoor rec team or a gym. Find ways to exercise from the comfort of your living room. Take up yoga, Pilates or try one of the vast number of workout videos on YouTube. You’ll be staying warm while getting your bod ready for spring and summer. Two birds, one stone.
8. Nurture Dreams of Spring
Wish spring would hurry up and arrive? Why waste your time wishing when you could spend your time getting ready?
Gather materials for your first warm weather renovation project. Start planning a spring barbeque, camping trip or beach getaway. Get a jumpstart on your dream landscaping by planting bulbs in anticipation of spring. Go ahead and buy that kayak you always wanted.
9. Treat Yourself
Still feeling blue? Take the time to treat yourself. Indulge in your favorite decadent dessert. Take yourself on a weekend getaway. Go see a show. Buy those earrings you’ve had your eye on.
No one knows what you like or what will make you happy better than you do. If the ideas on this list can put a little pep in your step, fantastic! If not, take them as inspiration and start brainstorming your personal winter pick me up.
